The Tiendas Campesinas Camari shops, organized in 1981, grew out of the Ecuadorian Popular Progressive Fund (FEPP), which was started to organize community development projects among the rural poor. Camari means "gift" in the Quechua Indian language. The organization is seen as a "gift" to artisans, providing market access and fair prices. Ecuadorian artisans are renowned for their unique bread dough ornaments & nativity sets, straw figures, balsa wood products, tagua nut carvings and textiles.
